Kathmandu. Apple’s file sharing feature ‘AirDrop’ is now available on all Android devices. Google recently confirmed that it is expanding the feature to allow sending files from other Android smartphones to Apple devices.
Last year, Google and Apple broke the support barrier between the two operating systems by integrating Google’s ‘Quick Share’ and Apple’s ‘AirDrop’. This opened up a new way to easily exchange files between Google’s Pixel phones and iPhones.
For a long time, Android could not compete with Apple’s AirDrop, but the idea of Quick Share and AirDrop working together was unthinkable for many. Many expected that this feature would also come to other Android phones after it was made available.
Although this feature was released in November 2025, one downside was that it was limited to Google’s ‘Pixel 10’ series phones. Other Android users were waiting for this feature to come to their phones.
Google has finally announced that it will be bringing the feature to the entire Android ecosystem. Speaking at a recent press briefing, Android engineering vice president Eric Kaye made it clear that the goal is to bring the update later this year.
“We’ve spent a lot of time and energy building a system that works not only with iPhones but also with iPads and MacBooks,” he said, “Now we’re working with our partners to expand it to the rest of the ecosystem. You’ll hear some special announcements soon.”
Google had been hinting from the start that it was planning to expand it to all Androids. Software code researchers had discovered that the feature was not limited to ‘Pixels’ but was placed as a separate app in the Google Play Store.
In addition, both Qualcomm and Nothing had previously said that they were working on running the feature on their own hardware. This also led to speculation that the feature would expand.
For a long time, the question of ‘when’ was more important than ‘whether’ the feature would come to other Androids. Although Google has not yet set a specific date for its release, it has clearly indicated that it will come ‘soon’.
